Small Publishers Are Getting Hit Hard by the Search Traffic Collapse

News: New Chartbeat data is making the gap harder to ignore.

Search referral traffic has fallen sharply for publishers, and smaller publishers are taking the biggest hit. Over the past two years, search referrals dropped:

  • 60% for small publishers

  • 47% for mid-sized publishers

  • 22% for large publishers

From December 2024 to December 2025, Google Search pageviews fell 34% and Google Discover fell 15%. Meanwhile, chatbot referrals such as ChatGPT have grown fast, but still account for less than 1% of publisher pageview referrals overall.

Why this matters

This is the clearest signal yet that AI referral growth is not replacing what publishers are losing from traditional search. Larger publishers appear more insulated from search declines, reinforcing Chartbeat's view that brand recognition and direct audience relationships are becoming essential.

Smaller publishers, who relied more heavily on SEO to acquire audiences, are getting squeezed hardest. For news publishers specifically, AI platforms may cite a lot of articles, but engagement per article is low — suggesting users are using AI mostly for quick facts and context rather than deeper reading.

What's next

Publishers probably cannot treat AI traffic as a near-term replacement for search traffic. The more practical move is to strengthen internal traffic and direct audience relationships now, while building licensing and monetization strategies for the AI layer in parallel.

Chartbeat's own takeaway is that internal traffic is becoming more important, rising from about 38% to 41% of total pageviews for news and media sites since late 2025. That points to a more practical near-term playbook: better recirculation, stronger homepage and newsletter habits, and clearer value beyond breaking news.

Separately, this also strengthens the strategic case for AI content licensing. If referral value keeps weakening, publishers will need other ways to capture value from how their content is used.
